Vegetable-tanned leather may survive for decades with careful maintenance. And much like a quality whiskey, the more time you spend with it, the more precious it becomes. Most veg tanned leather does not come pre-treated with oils and waxes, in contrast to chrome tanned leather. The fibers will stiffen and shrink when they come into contact with water. For the first month or two of usage, keep veg tanned leather out of the water to enable the leather fibers to relax and absorb oils to boost its inherent water-resistant properties.
Because veg tanned leather is very susceptible to severe temperatures, it is best to avoid using heat tools like a blow dryer or heat gun on the leather, and to avoid storing it in a hot place.
Using a soft, lint-free cloth and your fingertips, apply a little amount of leather balm to the leather every few months. Using a little amount, work it into the leather in delicate circles. By replacing the vital oils and waxes, you can nurture and restore the sheen of your veg leather.
Every year, we suggest utilizing our leather oil and cleaner kit to thoroughly clean and sanitize the leather to return it to its original beauty.
What is Vegetable Tanned Leather?
Leather is a natural material that comes from animal hides. The tanning process preserves the hide and changes its surface to make it more durable and resistant to staining. There are many different tanning methods, but vegetable tanning is one of the oldest and most traditional. In this process, tannin – a natural astringent – is extracted from vegetable matter and used to tan the leather. The tannin binds to the collagen in the hide, causing it to shrink and harden. This makes the leather more durable and less likely to stain or fade over time.
The finished product has a lovely natural look and feel, and is perfect for bags, belts, and other accessories. Vegetable-tanned leather is also environmentally friendly, as no harmful chemicals are used in the tanning process. So if you’re looking for a beautiful and sustainable alternative to synthetic leather, vegetable-tanned leather is the perfect choice!
